I remember singer Daphne Lee Martin as far back as about 15 years ago when she was in a folk group with a mutual friend of ours. So imagine my surprise after all this time when I recently came across a new song of hers – a cover of Talking Heads’ “This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody).” Whereas the original version is both funky and quirky (and memorably performed in the movie documentary Stop Making Sense), Martin’s rendition of the song is more in the electronic/lounge/dance/pop vein, augmented by the singer’s sultry and soulful voice. Still, this Connecticut-based artist’s take retains the sense of wonder and innocence of the Heads’ original that made it so charming and beloved. Meanwhile Martin’s fourth album (!) Fall On Your Sword is scheduled to be released this September. Guess I have a lot of catching up to do.
