Sharon Van Etten
Tramp

By David Chiu
Brooklyn artist Sharon Van Etten furthers the electrified sound from her second record, Epic, with her latest and possibly breakthrough album Tramp. Sonically, it’s an obvious contrast to her stark and intimate debut Because I Was in Love, but it retains Van Etten’s recognizable elements: her expressive and unique vocals and her honest lyrics on personal themes like relationships. There are moments when the songs just absolutely rock as with the emotional “Serpents” and “Warsaw,” and tracks that convey ethereal beauty like the folky “Kevin’s” and “We Are One.” Tramp is a powerful record, which makes it easy for anyone to fall for its hypnotic spell.
