Stranger Cat
In the Wilderness
Joyful Noise
by David Chiu
In the musical world, it is often true that an artist’s best work is the result of a personal obstacle or difficulty. That is certainly the case with musician Cat Martino, whose latest project as one-half of the electronic music duo Stranger Cat came about during a rough time for her that included a romantic break up, a physical ailment, and the question about continuing on with music. Fortunately clarity came to her in the form of this collaboration with fellow multi-instrumentalist and co-producer Sven Britt—the duo’s debut album In the Wilderness is a fusion of electronic soundscapes, melodic pop and hip-hop beats. Such lush and atmospheric tracks like “Sirens,” “I Lost It,” and “I Promise” complement the semi-autobiographical lyrics of introspection and yearning. And Martino’s soulful singing provides the perfect counterpoint to the dazzling and dreamy sonics provided by Britt. To sum up the sound of In the Wilderness could be ‘electronic R&B,’ and that’s what this moving, can’t-miss debut delivers.
