CD Review: Ledisi

Ledisi
Turn Me Loose
Verve Forecast
By David Chiu

Turn Me Loose, Ledisi’s second album, is my first exposure to the R&B singer’s music, and after listening to it, I wondered why it took me a while to discover her. Released last year It is full of gritty soul and funk attitude with Ledisi’s feisty vocals. That especially true of the infectious title track, which completely rocks as well as “Knockin’”; there are also some spiritual moments as well, as in the wonderful “Higher Changes” “Going Through Changes” and “Alone”; “The Answer Is Why is a tender ballad . Ledisi even turns in a blazing cover of “Them Changes” by the late drummer and former Band of Gypsys member Buddy Miles. What is conveyed by the album is a sense of empowerment along with romantic themes. (Incidentally or coincidentally there are four songs on the album with the word “changes” in the title). One can listen to this record and feel uplifted.
