The venerable pianist for the legendary Crusaders takes a solo turn on this latest effort. Just himself on the ivories, Sample turns in a stellar performance displaying both an virtuosic and impressionistic feel for the material whether they are pop standards (the gorgeous "Embraceable You," "I Got Rhythm") or jazz hallmarks (a subdued rendering of "The Entertainer," Fats Waller's "Ain't Misbehavin'", Duke Ellington's "I Got It Bad And it Ain't Good"). One really hears and appreciates Sample's dazzling work this warm and intimate set-up. No new ground broken here nor a trace of musical dissonance like in Monk's solo piano works, but Soul Shadows an infectious, smooth work nevertheless.
