patti smith is such a legend. writer, poet, singer, songwriter, and godmother of punk… she has literally become a staple in modern society. I’m so happy to see that she has a new album coming out that features her life’s greatest work.. because kids that have no idea who she is (absurd, i know!) will have the chance to discover her the way we all did in previous years!

An album as important as Pretty Hate Machine deserves far more than the typical music review. I applaud Ms. Carr’s creativity and insight in examining this historic work from a socio-economic perspective.

Being Followed and All You Need is Now are the best songs (IMO), but unlike so many cd’s I’ve purchased recently, I can listen all the way through and enjoy all the music. When I listen to this, I definitely think of the Rio album. Nice review!

That’s interesting — it sounds as if Lamm’s role in the group was marginalised in the 80s when they become a milque toast ballad band. I have often wondered how such a creative, idealistic band was able to make such a U-turn.

As one of the thousands of “old” punks from the 1970s id like to offer my condolences at the passing of Malcolm Mclaren.Like all us 15 year olds, my coming of age were the Sex Pistols, and Malcolm provided the catalyst to make the movement happen.
In hindsight maybe there were elements of luck/intuition/and that whole social era thing, but it had to have people like Malcolm and Lydon and Vivian to make the pieces fit together,
like all originals,these are the people who will make a mark on history and will be remembered long after we are all gone.
Still, as a 1970s “Punk Rocker” i will have my place in history assured at least.Thanks Malcolm, and thanks for those all to brief Punk years.
