Ex-Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren died yesterday in New York at age 64.

Here is a statement from former Sex Pistols singer Johnny Rotten:

“For me Malc was always entertaining, and I hope you remember that. Above all else he was an entertainer and I will miss him, and so should you.”

Also is a statement from Rotten’s colleague in the band, guitarist Steve Jones via Twitter:

“I was upset when I heard the news, as I’ve always had a soft spot for Malcolm. I knew him since I was 17 before the Pistols formed. I used to drive him around in Vivienne Westwood’s car to the tailors in London in the days of the ‘Let It Rock’ clothing store. Malcolm was definitely the Brian Epstein of punk—without him it wouldn’t have happened the way it did. I stayed friends with him throughout the years despite some of our differences. He came on ‘Jonesy’s Jukebox’ a couple of years ago, and that’s a good memory. But my fondest memory of Malcolm, and I loved the guy, was his birthday gift to me when I turned 21—he got me a hooker and some heroin.”

It’s rare to find an artist who is so thrilled to be dropped by a record label that not only does she happily made it public on her Web site, but then posts a new song free. That’s what Dresden Dolls singer Amanda Palmer did yesterday when she parted ways with Roadrunner Records after seven years.

Here is what she wrote on her blog:

as many of you know, i’ve been fighting very, very hard to get off the label for the better part of two years.
for the past seven years, anything i have written and recorded (solo or with my band, The Dresden Dolls) has technically been owned and under the ultimate control of the label, but no longer.
after endless legal bullshit, it’s over, i’ve been DROPPED, RELEASED, LET GO, whatever you wanna call it. in other words: i am FREE AT LAST!!!!!! RAAHH!!

In Memoriam: Amy Farris

Amy Farris
R.I.P.
By David Chiu

I was shocked to find out last month on the Internet that Amy Farris, a Los Angeles-based singer and fiddle player, died on Sept. 26 at age 40. (The Los Angeles Times recently reported that her death was ruled a suicide by the county coroner’s office). Farris has played with the likes of Exene Cervenka, Brian Wilson, Kelly Willis, Alejandro Escovedo and Bruce Robison. In 2004, she released her only album Anyway, which was produced by the Blasters’ Dave Alvin. Most recently, Farris was a member of Alvin’s latest group the Guilty Women, which put out an album earlier this year.

On Farris’ Web site, her family requests that instead of flowers, donations should be made to Hungry For Music, a nonprofit organization that gives musical instruments to underprivileged children.

Five years ago, I interviewed Farris for NewBeats.com, in which she spoke about the record, her life and influences. She cited the Los Angeles punk band X as a favorite and even covered their song “Poor Girl” on her album. She once said about being her own artist after playing the role of a side musician for others: “It feels great. I knew I wanted to do it for a long time but for one reason or another it’s taken me to have the confidence and finances and everything else together. Now it feels wonderful.”

You can read my interview with Farris from 2004 here.

News: Bob Dylan’s Holiday Album

Bob Dylan is issuing Christmas in the Heart on Oct. 13, according to Columbia Records. The collection will feature songs such as “Must Be Santa, “Winter Wonderland,” “Here Comes Santa Claus,” and “Little Drummer Boy.” All future royalties from the album’s sales will go to Feeding America.

“It’s a tragedy that more than 35 million people in this country alone — 12 million of those children – often go to bed hungry and wake up each morning unsure of where their next meal is coming from,” said Dylan in a press release announcing the album. “I join the good people of Feeding America in the hope that our efforts can bring some food security to people in need during this holiday season.”
