From what I heard so far from this Santa Monica band, Chief’s music is pretty impressive. It Is highlighted by their new single “Night and Day” off of their upcoming album Modern Ritual (Domino). It has a very haunting, atmospheric quality—kind of sounds like Coldplay. The band members are Evan Koga, Mike Moonves and Danny and Michael Fujikawa: they are former NYU students. Chief will be playing the Mercury Lounge on Wednesday and Union Pool on Sunday.

Nicole Simone, an emerging singer from Los Angeles, will be playing at the Living Room on June 14. She recently released her self-titled debut in March and contains “The Wedding Song,” which features a musical appearance by actor Jason Schwartzman. Simone has also played on bills with Diane Birch, Maria Taylor and Ed Harcourt.

Simone’s latest song, Melt, has a very noir-ish feel, further enhanced by the singer’s sultry voice. You can download the song here.

CD Review: Ledisi

Ledisi
Turn Me Loose
Verve Forecast
By David Chiu

Turn Me Loose, Ledisi’s second album, is my first exposure to the R&B singer’s music, and after listening to it, I wondered why it took me a while to discover her. Released last year It is full of gritty soul and funk attitude with Ledisi’s feisty vocals. That especially true of the infectious title track, which completely rocks as well as “Knockin’”; there are also some spiritual moments as well, as in the wonderful “Higher Changes” “Going Through Changes” and “Alone”; “The Answer Is Why is a tender ballad . Ledisi even turns in a blazing cover of “Them Changes” by the late drummer and former Band of Gypsys member Buddy Miles. What is conveyed by the album is a sense of empowerment along with romantic themes. (Incidentally or coincidentally there are four songs on the album with the word “changes” in the title). One can listen to this record and feel uplifted.
